Our Campus Landmarks

In 2017, Cameron Hayward of Boy Scout Troop 486 and member of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church started an Eagle Scout project to add markers to the St. Stephen’s Meditation Trail.  Through use of digital technology, church history can be made accessible to a wider audience. This project is intended to educate visitors about the history of various landmarks on the church’s Meditation Trail using physical trail markers and digital QR codes*; a blend of old techniques with new technology.

Trail markers with QR codes are installed along the trail. Scanning the codes on the markers directs you to audio entries, recorded by Boy Scouts in Troop 486 in Durham, and print entries on St. Stephen’s website about the Outdoor Chapel, the Stations of the Cross, and the Labyrinth.

What is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a code made up of black and white squares that can be read by the camera of a smartphone. Often, QR codes are used to store links to websites or other information. When someone scans the code, they will be redirected to the website embedded in the QR code.
