Opportunites of Adults

The Gallery Choir (adult choir) is a group of musicians who give of their time and talent to serve God by leading the congregational music on Sunday mornings and by offering up choral anthems from the rich heritage of Christian sacred music. The style of music offered varies widely. A healthy dose of music by Western European composers from the common performance period is certainly a staple of our musical diet, however, we also explore music by Russian, South African, Swedish, and American composers on a regular basis. Frequently, we offer music accompanied by full orchestra both in worship and in concerts.

Choir rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. and Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:15am. Each week, the Gallery Choir is the service choir for the principal service of worship, occuring at 10:30 a.m. in the nave.

Membership in our Gallery Choir is open to anyone high school age and up. You do not have to be a member of St. Stephen's to sing in the choir. If you would like to sing with us, please contact our director of music, Ben Hutchens, at ben.hutchens@ssecdurham.org or 919-493-5451.

The Gallery Choir Council serves a vital role in our growth, outreach, and organization. This year's council is comprised of:
Dave Gilliam, president
Charlotte Carroll, secretary/treasurer
Margaret Griffin, social secretary
Claire Locke, librarian

The Kenan Choral Scholars are undergraduate vocal performance majors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These students are selected annually by competitive audition. The scholars sing in the Gallery Choir and as a separate ensemble. This year's Kenan Choral Scholars are:

Cat Park, soprano (Raleigh, NC)

Emily Riehl, alto (Richmond, VA)

Charlie Clark, tenor (Hickory, NC)

Forrest Fleming, bass (Montgomery, AL)

The Hope Valley Ringers (Handbell Choir) is open to adults and rehearses weekly following the 10:30am service.  Our five-octave set of Malmark handbells and three-octave set of Malmark handchimes provides us with the instruments necessary for inspiring handbell ringing!

If you would like to ring with us, please contact our director of music, Ben Hutchens, at ben.hutchens@ssecdurham.org or 919-493-5451.

Opportunities for Children & Youth

The Sunday School Choir is comprised of children and youth who rehearse during the Sunday school hour (9:15-10:15am) and offer music in the 10:30am service of worship. This choir also performs the annual Christmas Pageant and a musical in the spring. All are Welcome!

Saint Stephen's is also proud to host two music camps for children & youth, grades pre-K through 12. The Hope Valley Music Camp will take place at St. Stephen's from 31-Mar through 4-April. The Summer Worship, Art, and Music Camp will take place from 21-July through 25-July. Spaces are limited in both camps, please enroll early by contacting Ben Hutchens at ben.hutchens@gmail.com
