Since 1982, St. Stephen's has featured some of the very finest musical artists from North Carolina and beyond through the St. Stephen's ConcertSeries. Originally the principal performance venue for what was then known as the St. Stephen's Chamber Orchestra, the concert series has evolved into an effective means for the parish to contribute to both the cultural and spiritual life of the larger Durham community in a significant way.
St. Stephen's Concert Series receives no direct monies from the parish. If you would like to become a financial contributor, please mail your contribution to: The St. Stephen's Concert Series, 82 Kimberly Drive, Durham, NC 27707.

THE FAMILIAR BECOMES NEW
Music: A Pathway to Worship “If we have the ears to hear, music is a spiritual language of sounds that
speak a range of human emotions and put us in touch with what
makes us both human and divine.”
CASS, the familiar concert series offered at St. Stephen’s, has a new name.
ST. STEPHEN’S CONCERT SERIES
Dorothy Kitchen and Marian Tyson are the new Interim Artistic Directors of St. Stephen’s Concert Series. In the spirit of moving forward into the next Fifty Years at St. Stephen’s, Dorothy and Marian have had discussions with Bob Kaynor, our rector, to create a new vision for this series. Musicians who are performing in the 2009-2010 series are familiar to you, especially if you have been coming to CASS concerts:
Andrew Tyson, pianist: October 25, 2009 The Borromeo Quartet and Dr. Joe Kitchen: November 22, 2009 Dr. Dan Huff’s UNC Men’s Glee Club: January 17, 2010
Dr. Tim Olsen, organist: February 28, 2010
Nicholas Kitchen’s Borromeo Quartet: April 18, 2010
What’s new about ST. STEPHEN’S CONCERT SERIES?
Music and Education Becoming Linked
We are working with Dr. Phyllis Leppert, Adult Ed. Planner, to align the concert series with our adult education and speaker series. If you participate in adult education and hear the speakers, you will improve the quality of your experience at the concerts.
We are working with Dr. Joe Kitchen to find ways to increase our congregants’ “music literacy.” If we become more disciplined listeners of liturgical music and concert series music, all of us, children through adults, will have a more meaningful worship experience.
Have you noticed children pausing to listen to the sounds of the harpsichord, a flute, or a violin being played in the choir loft during a worship service? Music speaks to all ages. No one is too young or too old to acquire a music vocabulary, understanding of liturgical music forms, and knowledge about the composers who have given us the gift of music for worship.
How do we enrich St. Stephen’s legacy of music?
Dr. Joe Kitchen, our organist, has begun writing a column for our Sunday Bulletins about the service music. Read, digest, and take advantage of this new feature on Sundays. We hope to enlist many of you St. Stephen’s worshippers to become regular attendees of the concerts.
If you attend St. Stephen’s, this series can be a vital part of your music and worship experience. We have recruited some familiar musicians for the series because they have a long and vested interest in St. Stephen’s music legacy. We hope to tune up our ears and listen for new insights.

Begin praying now for the musicians who will come to St. Stephen’s to present these concerts.
Robert Levin, a distinguished pianist and professor of music at Harvard, spoke at Curtis Institute of Music’s 2009 graduation, telling musicians that theirs is a “sacred calling.” Pray for each of the musicians as he or she practices and studies the music to find and express those moments of transcendent beauty.
