OLD BUSINESS
Urban Ministries – Secretary Joe Zglinicki stated that we did not have volunteers for the last Urban Ministry. The next Urban Ministry is scheduled for November 22nd, a breakfast, and to date only Norm Woods and Joe Zglinicki have committed to helping out with the event. Joe had asked anyone who would be interested in helping with this worthwhile event to send him an e-mail. If needed, a carpool could be arranged from St. Stephens’ should transportation be an issue.
Chapel Carpets – As of the last meeting we were under the belief that the carpet in the Chapel could be stretched as a solution to the problem. However, Bruce Waters stated that the carpet needs to be replaced because it is worn too badly. The Men’s Club could assist in moving the items out of the Chapel so that the carpet can be installed. There is no date set for replacing the carpet and Bruce stated that he would be seeking funds from the congregation to cover the cost of the carpet. No fund from the Vestry or the Men’s Club should be needed to complete the project.
October Fest – Joe Zglinicki stated that the October Fest is still on for Saturday, 10/17/09. To date we have several volunteers to help set up for the event and two members who will be cooking. Sign- up sheets were placed in the Narthex of the church so that we could get a better idea on how many would be attending. Father Bob stated that Cathy had the sheets at the office and Joe will contact her to find out what the initial tally is for the event. It was urged that anyone interested in attending should send an e-mail to the Secretary for a better head out. Once we have an idea of the count then we can proceed with picking up the supplies necessary. PLEASE COME OUT AND ATTEND, IT SHOULD BE A GREAT FAMILY NIGHT AND PLENTY OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE YOUNG KIDS AS WELL.
Adopt-A-Highway – This is scheduled for November 7th, 9 AM. Those involved should meet at the parking lot and bring whatever they need; i.e. gloves, nail sticks, etc. The more who turn out the shorter the time it will take to finish this event.
Habitat Interfaith Build – Dean McCumber presented information on this event. An informational memo was sent out by Dean on 10/14/09 which outlined the project pretty thoroughly. The St. Stephen’s Habitat Team (construction and hospitality) will be formally Commissioned by the Rector at the 8:00 am and 10:30am services on Sunday, October 18th, to prepare us for the upcoming build.
Dean stated that we are responsible for several weekends; namely, Saturday (10/31/09), Saturday (11/14/09), and Sunday (12/6/09). Apparently the hospitality part of the build is on schedule but volunteers are needed to physically help and supervise the build. Please help out by volunteering for this build. The location of the build is 1009 Carroll Street, Durham. A blessing will be held at 1:00 PM by Father Bob and other clergy members of other denominations who will be participating in this build. Framing will then begin and continue to about 3:00PM. Please come out and support this event. Any further questions can be directed to the office or Dean McCumber. Please read the information sent out which should answer a majority of the questions that you may have.
Burns Supper – Richard gave a brief outline of the history of this event, how it started, and how we have helped to celebrate this date. Richard stated that this event is one of the largest sources of revenue that the Men’s Club has which supports the financial needs of the club. Skip Lee passed out a sign-up sheet for members to name what they could do to help out with this event. This sheet will also be available in the Narthex for those who wish to add their names.
2010 Meeting Hosts – Norm Woods, knowing he would not attend this meeting, forwarded a request to the Secretary, Joe Zglinicki, to ask for volunteers to host the meetings for the year 2010. The Secretary was bombarded with members who stated their commitment to hosting the meetings, unbeknownst to the Secretary. Basically we need about 3-4 months where we don’t have a host scheduled. Please contact Norm with your information on this matter. Apologies to those who were scheduled and were unknown by the Secretary.
LED Lighting – George Hold stated that there are test lights in place to determine which lighting would be best suited to replace the old lighting system. To date no decision has been made regarding which lighting would be used. The cost of this project is $3,500.00 and George asked for donations towards this project which would be greatly appreciated. It was also suggested that George contact the supplier and find out if we could get a break on the cost because we are a Christian organization. He doubted that we would but he would ask and find out. Anyone interested in donating towards this project please contact George.
NEW BUSINESS
Annual Election for 2010 – Richard announced that if anyone is interested in running for a position on the Men’s Club to please contact Norm Woods. The election will be this December.
Acolyte Field Trip – Richard commented on the great experience that he and the Acolyte’s had during their meeting at the National Convention of Acolytes held at the Cathedral in Maryland. This was a truly worthwhile event and hoped that we could make it a part of the annual schedule.
The next meeting will be hosted by Bob Clarke at St. Stephen’s on 11/11/09 at 6:00 PM. A presentation is scheduled by Terry Allebaugh, President of Housing for New Hope. He wants our thoughts on how we, as a Men’s Club, can be of assistance with their Phoenix House effort. This is a small project that does not involve money and will help the less fortunate.
8:00 PM – The meeting was adjourned by acting President Richard Kilpatrick-Lyon

OLD BUSINESS
Urban Ministry: Norm presented the benefits of becoming involved in this worthwhile endeavor for our congregation, not only the Men’s Club. His participation in past involvements with this group brought about a sense of accomplishment for those who have little, if anything, in their lives. It is a chance to reach out and help those who are less fortunate and in need of the food and support of the community. It only involves a few hours of your time.
The address of this group is, Urban Ministries of Durham, 410 Liberty St., Durham, NC. 27702.
The upcoming schedule is as follows:
October 4, 2009, Sunday Lunch, 12:30pm – 11:30pm. Arrival time 11:30am.
November 22, 2009, Sunday Breakfast, 9:30am – 10:15am. Arrival time 8:30am.
- Bob Stanley has already volunteered for this date.
November 28, 2009, Saturday Breakfast, 9:30am – 10:15am. Arrival time 8:30am.
November 29, 2009, Sunday Breakfast, 9:30am – 10:15am. Arrival time 8:30am.
December 27, 2009, Sunday Lunch, 12:30pm – 1:30pm. Arrival time 11:30am.
Anyone interested in helping out with this project please let me know by e-mail so I can coordinate this project. If we get enough volunteers perhaps a carpool from St. Stephen’s would be possible.
Video Project: Norm stated that the Projector is up and running and that there has been a lot of interest from groups outside St. Stephen’s, as well as being useful to St. Stephen’s, and has the potential of generating some income as the result of it’s use.
Chapel Carpet Project: Norm stated that Matt Breuer has taken charge of this project and has been informed that the carpet can be stretched to eliminate the possibility of members tripping while using the chapel. No date has been set for this project but we will need some volunteers to help move around the pews, etc., for the carpet people to be able to do their work. Father Bob was present and stated that any Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday would be best so as not to interfere with any services in the chapel. Further volunteer requests will be made in the future once it is determined what date this will occur.
October Fest: This event is scheduled for 10/17/09 and the start time has not been determined as of this meeting. Further information will follow once we determine the start time and develop the menu for this event. To date we have myself and Bob Clarke handling the kitchen duties, Richard Kilpatrick-Lyon, Orlando LaManto, Skip Lee and family helping with set up. We can always use more help for this event, as well as any event that is planned. Please contact me via e-mail if you have some time to help out with this event. Vestry member Robin McGrath is in charge of this event and I am spearheading the Men’s Club participation.
Fall Grounds Clean-Up: Bob Stanley stated that the grounds are in pretty good shape due to the mulch project that was done in the spring. At this time there is no need for volunteers but this can change and he will keep us posted should the need arise for volunteers.
Adopt-A-Highway Project: This is being spearheaded by Bob Losey and no date has been set.
Burns Supper: This event is scheduled for the last Saturday in January and is being run by Richard Kilpatrick-Lyon, Skip Lee, George Birrell , and Norm Woods. More volunteers are needed. Please contact either Richard or Norm if you have the time to get involved in this project. This project has proven to be a source of revenue for the Men’s Club so that we can fund the many projects throughout the year.
NEW BUSINESS
Habitat for Humanities: Dean McCumber proposed that we get involved in this worthwhile project along with other denominations in the area. He presented pictures of a tear-down project and noted that any materials recovered are sold at a Habitiat store located on 15-501 near the Home Depot. Plans of building a 5 bedroom home on the tear-down site are underway. Currently there are 5 Episcopal churches, 1 Jewish congregation, and 1 Muslim organization united for a build in the future. No date for a meeting has been scheduled because the Jewish community can’t meet on Saturdays, the Muslim community can’t meet on Sundays, and the Episcopalians are available just about any time. A start up meeting is scheduled for 10/18/09 but the time and place have not been chosen yet. Further information on this event will be sent out once available. Anyone with any kind of talent is urged to please come forward and help out. You don’t need to be able to swing a hammer, there are plenty of opportunities to help out during these projects.
REMINDER: Sunday, 9/13/09, is Start-Up Sunday. If you are involved with a presentation for this event please be at St. Stephen’s on Saturday, 9/12/09, between 1 and 4 PM to set up your information.
Sad News: Russ Tiller has accepted a position in Charlotte and has already moved. We wish to thank Russ for all that he has done for the Men’s Club and St. Stephen’s. Father Bob stated that Russ has a plan to return, hopefully, in the next 3 years if things work out. We hope they do.
Norm stated that we need people to host upcoming Men’s Club meetings. Please contact Norm if you wish to host one of our meetings. It’s a little bit of work but it’s also lots of fun.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 14, 2009 and will be hosted by Orlando LaManto at his home.
7:30PM. The meeting was adjourned.
Following the meeting a presentation was made by Holly Latte-Mann on Leadership and Conflict. Anyone who did not attend missed a great presentation.
